Jan Blommaert, born November 4, 1961, is a Belgian sociolinguist and linguistic anthropologist, and Professor of Language, Culture and Globalization at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. He is regarded as one of the most important sociolinguists in the world and linguistic anthropologists. His contributions to sociolinguistic globalization theory have been significant. They focus on historical and contemporary patterns of language and literacy spread, as well as on new and lasting forms of inequality that result from globalization processes.

Blommaert believes that globalized society requires a fundamental understanding of language and society. This will require the discipline of sociolinguistics and its associated disciplines to shift in materialist, semiotic and ethnographic directions. All signs, written texts, shop sign inscriptions, memes on the internet, and bureaucratic interviews are created from and circulated within certain “orders of Indexicality”. Blommaert focuses on the inequal access to universally valuable language resources like standard English and Dutch and the social and politically unjust consequences. This is illustrated in Blommaert’s 2008 book, Grassroots Literacy. It focuses on marginal writing practices in Central Africa.

Blommaert has been moving towards a sociolinguistics for globalization since

2002. This was basically a new platform to think about language in society, taking into account the fact that “old Sociolinguistics” and its terminology couldn’t address and do justice new and unstable sociolinguistic reality resulting from superdiversity.
