Jan-Benedict Steenkamp is one of the most popular and richest Economist who was born on June 12, 1959 in Amsterdam, ****. Steenkamp was the third child of Constance Marie Therese (nee Nolet) and Petrus Antonius Jose Maria (Piet) Steenkamp. He was born in Amsterdam on 8 March 1925. The family moved to Eindhoven in 1966 where Steenkamp’s father was appointed full professor and dean of the Eindhoven Institute of Technology. His father was the founder of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), which was the most powerful party in the Dutch government from 1977 to 2010. He also served as president of the Dutch Senate between 1983 and 1991.
Steenkamp won numerous awards for his research publications. For his research, Steenkamp won the INFORMS 2003 Frank Bass award and the John D.C. Little Award. For the 1999 Journal of Marketing Research article, he was awarded the Willim F.O’Dell Award. It recognized his “most significant long-term contributions to marketing theory and methodology and/or practice”.
In 2005, Steenkamp was awarded the Dr Hendrik Muller Prize for “exceptional achievements in the area of the behavioral and social sciences” by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. This was the first time the prize awarded to a researcher in any area of business administration. He also served on the 2018 Spinoza Prize Committee.
In 2008, Steenkamp was ranked the most influential scholar in marketing in the period 1997-2006.
From 1989 to 1992, he worked as a Wageningen University professor. He was an associate professor, and then a full professor, at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) between 1992 and 2000. He was also GfK Professor for International Marketing Research at Wageningen University. He was CentER Research Professor in Marketing, and GfK Professor in International Marketing Research at Tilburg University (Netherlands) between 2000 and 2006. He joined UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in 2006 as C. Knox Massey Professor of Marketing and Chairman for the Marketing Area.

Joannes Evangelista Benedictus Maria “Jan-Benedict” Steenkamp, a marketing professor and author, was born June 12, 1959. He is the Knox Massey distinguished professor of marketing at Kenan-Flagler Business School at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. AiMark is a global center that studies key issues in marketing strategy. He was also co-founded and serves as the executive director. Steenkamp is also the author of Retail Disruptors and Global Brand Strategy, Brand Breakout, Private Label Strategy, Brand Breakout, Brand Breakout, and Brand Strategy. He is a well-respected scholar in marketing and business.
Steenkamp was a Eindhoven elementary and secondary school student from 1966 to 1977. He studied economics (Bachelor’s) and business administration(Master’s) at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, from 1977 to 1983. Two master theses were written by him. One was on the political risk multinational corporations face when they invest in foreign countries. The other was on the construction and use of orthogonal designs to conduct conjoint measurement experiments. He was made assistant professor at Wageningen University in 1985 and lecturer of marketing in 1983. In 1989, he received his PhD degree. The 1980s saw the Dutch university lack a formal dissertation path. Instead, one was expected to complete it on the job after receiving a master’s degree. Van Gorcum published his dissertation, Product Quality. His dissertation, Product Quality, was published by Van Gorcum. Its findings about a very low correlation between product price and real quality attracted international attention.
The Elsevier Society for Marketing Advances named him the 2004 Elsevier Distinguished Marketing Scholar. In 2013 he was given the EMAC Distinguished Marketing Scholar Award in recognition of his impactful research contributions and outstanding contributions to the European Marketing Academy.
