Goddard was a member of the Gold Coast Chargers and, after they were renamed, was the club’s captain until 1998 when they were expelled from the NRL competition. He holds the club record of most first-grade matches (86) and was part of the Gold Coast’s first semi-final win during the split 1997 season, in which they defeated Illawarra Steelers 25-14. Scott Sattler, Wes Patten and Martin Bella were his team-mates.
With the merger between Norths and Manly in 2000, Goddard found himself playing with the newly formed Northern Eagles. He played 50 games with the Eagles, mostly starting from the bench in the first 2 seasons. Goddard was starting at hooker in 2002, but at the end of that season Manly dissolved their relationship with the Bears, and Goddard retired.
Goddard was a part of 4 games played for the Queensland Maroons. He was part of all three games in the 1997 series. This was when many Queensland stars were competing in the Super League Tri-series. Queensland lost the series by 2-1. He played hooker in the series-deciding match three, which Queensland won. Goddard did not play Origin football again. However, he was included in the 22-man squad late in 2002.

Goddard made his debut in 1992 with the Gold Coast Seagulls, winning 26-6 over Parramatta Eels. However, it would be his last appearance of the season. He made only a few appearances in 1993 and 1994, mostly as a bench player, but it was 1995 that Goddard secured his spot as a hooker when he was offered the job by Eddie Fallins.
Goddard’s contribution to the 1997 series is most notable for the fight he had against Andrew Johns. Johns was knocked to the floor and Johns needed 27 stitches.
With the closure of the Chargers, Goddard signed with North Sydney Bears for the 1999 season. He started from the bench in his first game, behind Mark Soden, but was the starting hooker for the remainder of the year, scoring 7 tries. Goddard played in Norths final ever game as a first grade side which was a 28-18 victory against North Queensland in Townsville.
