James Wattana is one of the most popular and richest Thai snooker player who was born on January 17, 1970 in Bangkok, Thailand. James Wattana (Thai ecchms wathnaa – born January 17, 1970 as wathnaa phuuobm Wattana pu-ObOrm; renamed rachphl phuuobm Ratchapol in 2003) is a professional snooker player from Thailand. He competes in ranking tournaments and holds an invitational tour card.
He lost to Stephen Hendry in 1997 and 1993, but reached the semi-finals at the World Snooker Championship. He returned to the top 32 in the world rankings after a strong 2004-05 season. However, he was the first player since 1992 not to have a whitewash at World Championship. Ali Carter lost against him in round one of qualifying for the 2005 tournament. He was in such poor form that he had to withdraw from the main tour in 2008 due to his poor form. However, he continued to play and entered the 2008 World Amateur Championships at Wels, Austria. He lost to Thepchaiya U-Nooh in 16th place. After beating Mei Xiwen 7-3, he won the 2009 Asian Championships Tangshan, China.
In 2014, he lost his place on the professional snooker circuit, as he finished outside the top 64 on the official world rankings list at the end of the 2013/2014 season. However, he was one of three players awarded an invitational tour card for the next season – alongside Hendry and Steve Davis – and has since competed fairly regularly in tournaments as an amateur. In 2015, he lost in the first round of the qualifiers for the World Championship 3–10 to Jimmy White. In 2016, he lost in the first round of the qualifiers for the World Championship 6–10 to Peter Ebdon.
He is the eighth professional player to win more than PS1million in prize money. With three maximums, he is also one of seven players who have achieved more than two maximum breaks during competition. His first was at the World Masters in 1991, and his second at the British Open in 1992. The British Open’s record for fastest maximum break at seven minutes nine seconds was also the fastest.
