James Rothman is one of the most popular and richest Biologist who was born on November 3, 1950 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, United States. American biochemist James Edward Rothman was born November 3, 1950. He is the Fergus F. Wallace Professor of Biology at Yale University. He is also the Chair of the Department of Cell Biology, Yale School of Medicine and Director of the Nanobiology Institute on the Yale West Campus. Rothman is also an adjunct professor of physiology at Columbia University, and a researcher at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. Rothman, along with Randy Schekman (and Thomas C. Sudhof) were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2013. Other honors include the King Faisal International Prize 1996, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize 2002 from Columbia University, and the Albert Lasker award for basic medical research in 2002.

Rothman, Richard Scheller, and Thomas C. Sudhof were awarded the Kavli Prize Neuroscience 2010 for “discovering molecular basis neurotransmitter release”.

Rothman’s research details how vesicles—tiny sac-like structures that transport hormones, growth factors, and other molecules within cells—know how to reach their correct destination and where and when to release their contents. This cellular trafficking underlies many critical physiological functions, including the propagation of the cell itself in division, communication between nerve cells in the brain, secretion of insulin and other hormones in the body, and nutrient uptake. Defects in this process lead to a wide variety of conditions, including diabetes and botulism.

Rothman was appointed to the Amersham plc scientific advisor board in 1995. Rothman was named Chief Science Advisor to GE Healthcare after Amersham plc was purchased by GE Healthcare.
