Stewart was a television expert academic for Helike-The Real Atlantis in 2002 BBC Horizon. This film, which was about the destruction in Helike, Greece, by an earthquake and tsunami in 373 BCE in 373 BCE, was rediscovered in 2001. He says that this gave him a desire to see more geology on television. After appearing in a Horizon film on earthquakes in April 2003, he was invited to join the team in the fourth series Rough Science (shown January/February 2004, where a team of scientists are challenged to solve problems using the resources available in their local environment and a limited set of supplies.

Stewart was made Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2013 Birthday Honours. This honour recognizes his services to science communication and geology.

Iain Simpson Stewart FGS FRSE, born 1964, is a Scottish geologist. He holds the UNESCO Chair for Geoscience and Society and is Professor of Geoscience Communication at Plymouth University. He also serves on the Scientific Board of UNESCO’s International Geoscience Programme. Stewart has been called the “rock star” of geology. He is most well-known for his work on a variety of BBC science programs, including Earth: The Power of the Planet (2008), which was nominated for a BAFTA award.

Stewart was an Equity card holder and child actor. In 1978, Stewart made his first television appearance in a BBC Scotland adaptation John Buchan’s 1922 novel Huntingtower. John Hannah was one of his East Kilbride Rep Theatre contemporaries. He left acting behind and studied geography and geology in Strathclyde University. In 1986, he graduated with a first-class honours Bachelor’s degree in Science. His doctorate was entitled “The evolution of normal fault scarps in the Aegean region” and was completed at the University of Bristol in 1990. He was conducting research on earthquakes in Turkey and Greece. He began teaching geology in 1990 at the West London Institute of Higher Education, Osterley. For several years, he shared the Warden’s apartment with his wife. From 1995 onwards, he was at Brunel University as a result of its merger with WLIHE. After twelve years living in London, he returned to Scotland to pursue a new career as science broadcaster. Brunel was nostalgic for Brunel. He said, “And invariably you move on to places which for all their advantages, seem surprisingly narrow and more fallow in comparison.” It was an extraordinary place to live. In 2004, he moved to Plymouth to become Professor of Geoscience Communication. This is a position that he considers to be the best in the world.
