Hunter Wendelstedt, whose career began as his father was about to retire, still wears the same number 21 as his father. The Wendelstedts have been the only father-son team to umpire a Major League game together. This was an event that took place over multiple series in 1998. Wendelstedt was the umpire at home plate when Bartolo Collon scored his first home run of his career in San Diego.

After Gardenhire had argued that a pitch appeared to be strike three to Lance Berkman, Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected by Wendelstedt on October 7, 2010. Wendelstedt ruled it to be a ball. On the next pitch Berkman scored a run scoring a run and putting Yankees ahead, 3-2. They would eventually win, 5-2. This was the fourth time Wendelstedt had ejected Gardenhire. After arguing a nonbalk call, Gardenhire was suspended for one game and fined. In 2005, Wendelstedt suggested to Gardenhire that he attend his umpiring school. The contentious history raised questions about Major League Baseball’s decision to place Wendelstedt in a post-season series. This is because there has been precedent in baseball for avoiding confrontations. For example, the American League removed Ron Luciano, the umpire who was involved with the Baltimore Orioles.
