Hunor Mate is one of the most popular and richest Swimmer who was born on March 13, 1983 in Szeged, Hungary. Austrian swimmer Istvan Hunor Mate was born March 13, 1983 in Csongrad (Hungary). He specialized in breaststroke events. He is also a 22-year-old Austrian national champion and five-time Austrian record holder. He is currently a Wolfsberger SV member in Vienna, Austria.

Mate broke two Austrian records at the 2009 FINA World Champs in Rome, Italy for the 50 and 100 m Breaststroke. His time was 28.00 seconds, and his time was 1:00.78 respectively. Mate also set three additional records in the short- course swimming at the 2009 European Championships, Istanbul, Turkey.

Four years after competing in his first Olympics, Mate qualified for his second Austrian team, as a 29-year-old, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, by clearing a FINA B-time of 2:13.40. In the 200 m breaststroke, Mate challenged seven other swimmers on the second heat including Canada’s Scott Dickens and four-time Olympian Jakob Johann Sveinsson of Iceland. He came in fifth place by nine hundredths of a second (0.09) ahead of Thailand’s Nuttapong Ketin with a time of 2:15.98. Mate, however, failed to advance into the semifinals, as he placed twenty-ninth out of 64 swimmers in the preliminary heats.

Mate qualified for two events at the 2008 Summer Olympics Beijing by clearing a FINA-standard entry time in 2:13.21 (200m breaststroke from the European Championships, Eindhoven, Netherlands). Mate broke the Austrian record in the 100 m breaststroke with a time of 1:00.93. He touched the wall first in heat 4, two seconds ahead Turkey’s Demir Ayasoy. However, he missed the semifinals by 0.21 second. Mate placed 18th of 65 swimmers during the first night preliminaries. Mate finished third in the 200 m breaststroke event and was placed twenty-first overall. He did this by 0.47 seconds behind Glenn Snyders from New Zealand. His personal best was 2:11.56.

Mate was born in Csongrad in Hungary. He began swimming at seven years old and has competed in breaststroke events at numerous national senior and junior championships. He was awarded a swimming scholarship to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2005. There he became a varsity swimmer with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Mate made his international debut at 2007 European Short Course Swimming Championships, Debrecen. He finished eleventh in the 50 m, thirteenth in the 100 m and sixteenth in the 200 m breaststroke.

He bettered his mark in the preliminary rounds, at the 2012 European Championships in Debrecen, with a time of 2:14.79, but finished in nineteenth place.
