Hugh Phillip Possingham (born 21 July 1962) is the Chief Scientist at The Nature Conservancy. In 2005, he was elected to the Australian Academy of Science. He was the first Australian elected to the Ecological Society of America’s Fellows List. In 2016, he was elected as a Foreign Associate of the USA National Academy of Sciences.

Possingham was awarded the Australian Mathematical Society Medal and the inaugural Fenner Medal for plant and animal biology by the Australian Academy of Sciences. He also received the 1999 and 2009 Eureka Prizes in Environmental Research. He was also awarded the Mahathir Science award for tropical natural resources in 2016, alongside Kerrie Wilson, Eric Meijard.

Possingham graduated with honours from the University of Adelaide’s department of Applied Mathematics in 1984. He received his D.Phil. He received a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in 1987 and completed his D.Phil. His thesis was on optimal foraging theory.

Possingham was first a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University with Joan Roughgarden, where he worked on intertidal community recruitment dynamics. After returning to Australia, Possingham was awarded a QEII Fellowship from the Australian National University. He conducted research on conservation biology and applications of population viability analysis. In 1995, he became a professor at the University of Adelaide. Possingham was appointed a chair at the University of Queensland, Brisbane in 2000. He was an ARC Professorial Fellow, Federation Fellow, and Laureate Fellow. He was the Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions and the Threatened Species Recovery Hub. He joined The Nature Conservancy in 2016 as its Chief Scientist.

Possingham co-authored “The Brigalow Declaration” with Dr Barry Traill, used by Queensland Premier Beattie to support an end to land-clearing in Queensland. Land clearance in Queensland was removing 500,000 hectares of native vegetation each year, and was responsible for 10% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions; its cessation enabled Australia to meet its Kyoto Protocol target. In 2009 he proposed devoting a proportionate fraction of gambling revenues to saving an endangered species, to be selected by a random drawing shown on television before the Melbourne Cup.
