Hu Jia is one of the most popular and richest Civil Rights Advocate who was born on July 25, 1973 in Beijing, China. Hu’s parents were both students at Tsinghua University, Beijing, and Nankai University, Tianjin. They were rightists during Mao Zedong’s Anti-Rightist Movement in 1957. They were sent to remote areas of Hebei and Gansu. He often lived with his parents until 1978 when Deng Xiaoping was elected to power. The political stigma against them was dropped.
Hu was at university when he became interested in environmental issues and participated in many environmental organizations, including the Friends of Nature led by Liang Congjie and the 1997 Green Camp university student environment camp led by Tang Xiyang. Hu Jia participated in the rescue of some wild elk from severe flooding in 1998. Hu participated in the rescue of Tibetan Antelopes that were being killed for their fur.
On February 16, 2006, Hu was detained for 41 days. His detention was not acknowledged by the Chinese government. After his return to his apartment in Beijing, where he lives with his wife Zeng Jinyan (also an AIDS activist), Hu Jia was kept under house arrest until March 2007. Two months later, on May 18, 2007, Hu Jia and his wife were placed under house arrest again on charges of “harming state security.” Hu Jia has remained active via emails and blogs while under house arrests.
In 2006, Beijing Zhiaixing Information Counseling Center (formerly called Aizhixing Institute of Health Education), a human rights advocacy group with which Hu was affiliated, received combined grant of $179,113 from National Endowment for Democracy and US State Department for conducting programs within China.
Hu graduated from Beijing School of Economics in 1996 (now Capital University of Economics and Trade Shou Du Jing Ji Mao Yi Da Xue), where he studied information engineering.

Hu Jia (Chinese Hu Jia; pinyin Hu Jia; born July 25, 1973 in Beijing) was a prominent critic of the Communist Party of China and a Chinese civil rights activist. His research has been focused on the Chinese democracy movement and the Chinese environmentalist movement. He also worked extensively on HIV/AIDS in China. Hu is the director of June Fourth Heritage & Culture Association. He was also the executive director of Beijing Aizhixing Institute of Health Education, as well as one of founders of Loving Source, a non-governmental organization. Hu has been active in the protection of endangered Tibetan antelope. Hu was awarded numerous European awards for his activism. The Paris City Council and European Parliament gave him the Sakharov Prize of Freedom of Thought in December 2008.
Hu insists upon his rights as a citizen in the People’s Republic of China. Hu demands from the police that they state the Chinese law under which he is being detained by them when they take him into custody (often to prevent him from participating in planned activities or sometimes to make sure he is not present at sensitive times, such as the anniversary of 1989’s Tiananmen Square protests). Hu claims that security officers are generally not able to do so.
In July 2000, the writer Wang Lixiong introduced Hu to AIDS activist Wan Yanhai. Afterwards Hu Jia became involved in AIDS prevention work and took an active part in the AIZIBING Institute of Health Education AIDS, which Wan Yanhai had founded. As one of the founders Loving Source a non-governmental organization and advocacy group for individuals with AIDS, Hu Jia has been involved in helping people suffering from AIDS and AIDS orphans in Henan province. He has criticized the government over its treatment of people with AIDS. According to Amnesty International, Hu has since resigned from Loving Source to prevent the authorities from harassing the group.
