Mackie and Tom DeFalco collaborated to create the six-issue miniseries Spider- Man Clone Saga in late 2009. The story was inspired by Mackie’s 1990s crossover notes. Later, it was collected in the trade paperback Spider-Man: The Real Clone Saga.
Mackie’s work on the X-Men line included writing the spin-off title X-Factor from #115–149 (1995–1998) as well as its successor title Mutant X (1998–2001). He wrote several mini-series featuring Gambit, Wolverine, and Rogue.
Mackie was named the regular Web of Spider-Man writer in 1992 with #85. Through the Clone Saga, he would continue to be a Spider-Man title writer. Mackie was appointed the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man as well as the Peter Parker: Spider-Man series in January 1999. Mackie left Spider-Man with The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 2, #29 (May 2001).

Mackie began his career as an assistant editor at Mark Gruenwald’s comics magazine in 1984. Gruenwald used to joke that Mackie was a mysterious character whose face no one at Marvel ever saw. This was early in Mackie’s career. Mackie was promoted to the position of Managing Editor of Special Projects in 1987. He then managed Marvel’s “New Universe.”
Mackie was first recognized as a writer when he and Javier Saltares created a new Ghost Rider series. The series relaunched the character and introduced Danny Ketch as its host. Mackie was the Ghost Rider writer until issue #69, January 1996. He authored two Ghost Rider/Wolverine/Punisher team-up one- shots, Hearts of Darkness (1991) and its sequel The Dark Design (1994).
Mackie wrote The Ravagers series for DC Comics in 2012 as part of the “Second Wave” of The New 52.
