Houston McTear Biography

Houston McTear is one of the most popular and richest Sprinter who was born on February 12, 1957 in Baker, Florida, United States. Houston McTear, February 12, 1957 – November 1st 2015 was an American sprinter who rose from poverty in Florida to become an international track star during the mid-1970s.

McTear was a qualified runner for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, in the 100m. However, McTear suffered an injury to his achilles tendon in the Olympic Trials and had to withdraw from the Olympic field. Johnny “Lam”, Jones finished sixth. McTear’s rival Harvey Glance led the American 4×100 meter relay team, which won the gold medal.

McTear appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1978, and qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in 1980, but the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics prevented his participation. From there he fell into drug use and was homeless for three years during the 1980s. He attempted a comeback in the early 1990s and won the 60 meters at the Swedish Indoor Championships in 1990 with a time of 6.68s.

McTear died of lung cancer on November 1, 2015, aged 58, in Stockholm. He was survived by four children and his widow, Haglund, who died on November 21, 2015, only three weeks after McTear’s death, also from cancer.

McTear was a top 10 runner in the 100 meter distance for the United States between 1975-1980. However, he was faster at shorter distances, including 60 m. McTear’s 1978 world record of 60 meters in 6.54 seconds stood until it was broken in 1986 by Ben Johnson. McTear’s 1980 mark of 6.38 was invalidated by “questionable timing”. It would still be the second-best all-time performance if that time was allowed to stand. His meteoric rise was ended when the United States boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics.

McTear was raised in Okaloosa County. McTear was a Baker High School student in Baker, Florida. He won the state titles in both the 100- and 220-yard dashes four times. This makes him the only Florida high school athlete to win this title. McTear ran 9.0 in the 100-yard sprint as a high-schooler at the Florida AA High State Meet, Winter Park, Florida. However, the world record time was not recognised because it was manually timed. This time is still the NFHS National High School Record in the now-defunct event. Track and Field News named him the 1975 High School Athlete-of-the Year.

At the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, McTear ran a 10.16 sec over 100 metres, at the time the fastest ever run under any condition by a Florida high school athlete. It is still No. 3 on the all-time list, only surpassed by Jeffery Demps and Marvin Bracy.
