Hossein Derakhshan is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on January 7, 1975 in Iran, Canada. Hossein Derakhshan, Persian: Hsyn Drkhshn; born January 7, 1975), also known by Hoder, was an Iranian-Canadian blogger and journalist who was held in Tehran between November 2008 and November 2014. Many journalists refer to him as the father of Persian blogging. He was also instrumental in promoting podcasting in Iran. Derakhshan, who was detained on November 1, 2008, was sentenced to 19 1/2 year imprisonment on September 28, 2010. In October 2013, his sentence was reduced to 17 year. Iran’s supreme leader pardoned him and he was freed from Evin prison on November 19, 2014.
Since 2004, Derakhshan’s blog, along with other websites and blogs from political Persians, has been blocked or filtered by the Iranian government.
Derakhshan spoke at the Wikimania 2005 conference in Frankfurt, Germany regarding the complementary use of wikis and blogs to aid political reform and the growth of democracy in Iran and other countries.
Derakhshan wrote in his blog in December 2006: “If the US attacked Iran, despite all my problems with the Islamic Republic, I’d go back and fight these bastards. … I can’t let myself sit down for a moment and watch them make a Baghdad out of Tehran.” He later published a commentary on The Guardian, titled “Stop Bullying Iran”, in which he elaborated on his short blog post on why he defends Iran.
He founded Stop censoring Us in December 2003. This blog was created to monitor the situation regarding internet censorship within Iran. He spoke a few times about Internet censorship, and ways to bypass filters on a VOA Persian TV program.

Derakhshan began his career as a journalist, writing about the Internet and digital culture in Asr-e Azadegan’s reformist newspaper. After the paper was shut down by the judiciary, Derakhshan moved to Hayat-e No. Panjere-i Roo be Hayaat was his column. It was a reference to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. Later, it became a weekly page about digital culture and computer games.
Derakhshan left Iran in December 2000 to move to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His weblog was launched in Persian on September 25, 2001. It was called Sardabir: Khodam (or “Editor: Me”).
Nineteen Iranian bloggers published a letter “categorically condemn[ing] the circumstances surrounding Derakhshan’s arrest and detention and demand[ing] his immediate release”. A website “Free the blogfather” was created by supporters of Derakhshan in order to campaign for his freedom. Before an earlier return to Iran in 2005, Derakhshan had published recommendations of what to do if he or someone else were arrested in Iran, including requests to “spread the word”, to “get the English-language media involved” and to “get the publicity translated [into Persian]” and “keep it up”.

His second visit was to participate in a conference at The Chaim Herzog Center for Middle East Studies and Diplomacy at Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheva. The annual international conference in 2007 was titiled ‘Reform, Resistance, and Conflicts in the Middle East.” Hossein participated in panel titled ‘Weblogging as a Space of Resistance’, where he spoke about Iranian weblogs in a presentation titled as ‘Internet in Iran: Are Weblogs and other forms of new media helping democracy in Iran?’.
