Horacio Castellanos Moya Biography

Horacio Castellanos Moya is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on November 21, 1957 in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán Department, Honduras. On a return visit to El Salvador, he saw a demonstration of unarmed workers and students in which 21 people were killed by governmentsnipers. He fled El Salvador in March but didn’t return to Canada to attend school. He instead traveled to Costa Rica and Mexico where he was able to find work as a journalist. He wrote sympathetically about Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (a political party formed after the 1932 Salvadoran peasant slaughter). However, he soon became disillusioned with the violence within the party.

Castellanos Moya, a journalist and cultural writer from El Salvador, returned to El Salvador in 1991 to contribute to the monthly magazine Tendencias. He was a contributor to the creation of Primera Plana, a weekly magazine that he worked at until 1996. He published many novels over the years, including Senselessness and The She-Devil In the Mirror. Revulsion’s protagonist is a Thomas Bernhard-esque character, who returns to El Salvador after 18 years to deliver a 119 page diatribe against their country. Some Salvadorans were furious at the novel, with some calling for a ban on books and others setting fire to it. Castellanos moya’s mother was threatened with death by her son, and Castellanos moya fled El Salvador in 1997.

Castellanos Moya was granted residencies in a program supported by the Frankfurt International Book Fair (2004-2006) and as a Writer-in-Residence at City of Asylum/Pittsburgh (2006-2008). In 2009, he was a guest researcher at the University of Tokyo. Currently he teaches at the University of Iowa and is a regular columnist for Sampsonia Way Magazine where he “looks for topics that open debates, new perspectives, and controversy.”

In 2014 he received Chile’s Manuel Rojas Ibero-American Narrative Award.

His first novel, La diaspora (which focuses on the struggles of exiles from Salvadoran Civil War), won the Premio Nacional de la Novela in 1988. It was awarded by the Universidad Centroamericana “Jose Simeon Canas”.
