Hollis Hammonds Biography

Hollis Hammonds is one of the most popular and richest Installation Artist who was born on March 22, 1971 in Independence, Kentucky, United States. Her childhood home caught on fire just one week after Hammonds was fifteen years old. Her family and she escaped their trailer home in northern Kentucky unscathed. Hammonds recalls the surreal calm they felt as they waited for firetrucks from the other end of the county. It was devastating and traumatic. Hammonds used the metaphor of the home to describe the structure of her memory in her work.

Austin Chronicle named her work as one of the top ten most memorable pieces of art for 2015, when she installed Blanket Of Fog at Women & Their Work. She also spoke at the CAA conference about drawing with Jane Hammond and Richard Moninski, as well as Elise Engler.

Hammonds works with multi-media, often combining sculpture and drawing in installations. Her work has been exhibited at many places, including the Dishman Art Museum, Beaumont, TX, Redux Contemporary Art Center, Charleston, SC, the Reed Gallery at University of Cincinnati in OH, the Museum of Art at University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg (MS), the Hiestand Galleries at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, and at Women and Their Work Gallery in Austin, TX. She is currently the Chair of St. Edward’s University’s Department of Visual Studies in Austin, TX. Hammonds teaches drawing, public art and the graphic novel. “… She is also an Associate Dean in Humanities. Hammonds was elected to the Art in Public Places panel in Austin, Texas.

Hammonds’ style was less personal before 2011. Prior art was about consumer culture. Her current work is autobiographical. Hammonds says, “My works contain a variety images, from ordinary objects to valuable artifacts, assembled and collected, and then collaged together through drawings or installations. The works serve as evidence, regardless of whether they are personal memories or larger events that have a greater impact on larger communities. Whatever form the work takes there are threads that link memory and a collective consciousness. When I combine images and junk found on the streets, my goal is to create a scene that feels real. Something that feels close to my memories.

She was a 2016 Artist-in-Residence at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation in Charlotte, NC.
