Prohaska works as a pundit on football for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Prohaska’s nickname, “Schneckerl”, is Viennese for curly hair. It comes from his curly hair in his youth. Prohaska was a talented, combative, and elegant midfielder. He played as a deep-lying playermaker and was well-known for his intelligence, technique, and precise passing.
He was appointed manager of Austria’s national soccer team in 1993. They qualified as group winners for 1998 World Cup in France. After a 9-0 defeat to Spain in 1999, he quit. He returned to Austria Vienna management from 1999 to 2000.
Working as a pundit for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF, Prohaska suggested at the 2006 World Cup that referee Graham Poll’s famous yellow card blunder was a result of heavy alcohol consumption before the match.
Prohaska quit playing in 1989. Prohaska retired shortly after retiring. He was a coach at Austria Vienna where he won two Austrian League titles as well as two Austrian Cups.

Prohaska began his professional career at Austria Vienna in 1972. He had contributed to his club winning four Austrian league titles, and three Austrian Cup victories by 1980. He joined Inter Milan in 1980 and won the Italian Cup his second season. He moved to A.S. Roma in 1982 where he won his first Italian championship. In 1983, he returned to Austria Vienna to complete his playing career.
Prohaska made his debut as an Austrian player in a friendly match against Turkey in November 1974. He also participated at the 1978 FIFA World Cups and 1982 FIFA World Cups. Prohaska earned 83 caps and scored 10 goals. He retired from international football before the 1990 World Cup, after a June 1989 World Cup qualifier against Iceland.
In November 2003, Prohaska was selected as the Golden Player of Austria by the Austrian Football Association as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. In August 2004, he was voted the Austrian Footballer of the Century as the Austrian Football Association celebrated its 100th anniversary.
