Henry Markram is one of the most popular and richest Neuroscientist who was born on March 28, 1962 in South Africa, Israel. Henry John Markram, born 28 March 1962 in Israel, is a neuroscientist and professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. He is also the director of the Blue Brain Project.
The Human Brain Project, which was led by Markram, was funded by the European Union in 2013 for $1.3 billion. Markram claimed that the project would allow for a simulation of the human brain on a supercomputer in a matter of a decade. This would revolutionize the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The project was halted after less than two years.
He was appointed full professor at EPFL in 2002. He also became the founder/director of Brain Mind Institute and Director for the Center for Neuroscience and Technology. Markram is a researcher at the BMI in the Laboratory for Neural Microcircuitry. He continues to study the organization of the neocortical columns and develops tools for multi-neuron clamp recordings. This can be combined with electrical stimulation and laser.

Markram was born in South Africa and is now an Israeli citizen. Markram met Kamila Markram, a fellow neuroscientist (b. 1975, at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research Frankfurt. Together, they moved to the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne and founded Frontiers Media in 2007. Markram was married twice, and has five children. Kai is autistic.
Henry Markram received his Bachelor of Science in Physiology and History and Philosophy of Science degrees from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. He also obtained his PhD in Neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel in 1991 under Menahem Segal. His PhD research revealed a link between memory mechanisms and acetylcholine. He showed that acetylcholine modulates synaptic plasticity’s primary receptor.
On 8 October 2015, the Blue Brain Project published the first digital reconstruction and simulation of the micro-circuitry of a neonatal rat somatosensory cortex.

Is Blue Brain project successful?
In addition to the above, in 2011, the Blue Brain Project conceived, founded and won the grant to launch the European Human Brain Project (HBP). Even though the HBP has refocused its efforts, it is doing considerable work gathering the data for brain research and developing some important informatics tools.
What is the purpose of the Blue Brain Project?
The goal of the Blue Brain Project is to build biologically detailed digital reconstructions and simulations of the mouse brain. EPFL’s Blue Brain Project is a Swiss brain research Initiative led by Founder and Director Professor Henry Markram.
Why is it called Blue Brain?
Data is collected about all the many different neuron types. This data is used to build biologically realistic models of neurons and networks of neurons in the cerebral cortex. The simulations are carried out on a Blue Gene supercomputer built by IBM. Hence the name “Blue Brain”.
Can the brain be simulated?
In late 2013, researchers in Japan and Germany used the K computer, then 4th fastest supercomputer, and the simulation software NEST to simulate 1% of the human brain. The simulation modeled a network consisting of 1.73 billion nerve cells connected by 10.4 trillion synapses.
Who developed Blue Brain?
The Blue Brain Project is a Swiss brain research initiative that aims to create a digital reconstruction of the mouse brain. The project was founded in May 2005 by the Brain and Mind Institute of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.
