Hendrig Gutierrez, born August 28, 1968 in Hoboken (New Jersey), and raised in Miami, is an American retired soccer player. He started his career in lower French divisions and ended it in the United States. He was part of the U.S. team at the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship as well as the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship. He was a member of the United States men’s national soccer team and earned one cap.

Gutierrez is a youth soccer coach with Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association of North Carolina. He was appointed as an assistant coach for the Cary RailHawks’ U23’s in the fourth division Premier Development League. He was appointed coach of the TFCA Academy in 2013. In the 2013-14 season, they had a poor record. However, they are now 5-5-0 in league play for the 2014-15 season. Patrick O’Neill, one of his players, said that it was fun and enjoyable. He is also the director of Triangle futbol club alliance (TFCA). He is now a coach at NCFC.

Gutierrez was a top youth player who was selected to the U.S. team that went 1-2 at U-16 World Cup 1985. He was also a member the U-20 World Cup team in 1987. Again, the U.S. ran to a record of 1-2 and did not make it to round 2. Gutierrez won his only cap for the U.S. seniors in a tie with Jamaica on September 8, 1999. He was the first to play, but he was replaced by Chris Albright.

Gutierrez graduated in 1987 from Hialeah Miami Lakes School. He was an All- American Parade Magazine High School soccer player in 1986. Gutierrez was a North Carolina State University student where he was a forward and a midfielder on the men’s soccer teams from 1988 to 1991. As a freshman midfielder, Gutierrez was named All-American first team in 1988 and 1991 as a senior forward. He was also a two-time ACC Player of Year and a second team All American. He was also named the 1991 ISAA Player-of-the Year.

Gutierrez was a member of the French Second Division club Stade Rennais in 1991 and Stade Brestois 29, in 1992. After the 1992-1993 season, Gutierrez moved to Stade Saint-Brieuc but returned to Brest for 1993-1994. Gutierrez signed a 3-year contract with Cleveland Crunch, the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) on October 21, 1994. Gutierrez made his debut the following day after the season was already in action. He scored two goals. He was named the NPSL rookie of the year that season. He broke his foot playing with the Milwaukee Wave during the 1995-1996 preseason. He missed eight games, but he returned strong and finished fourth in scoring. He played a major role in the Crunch’s 1995-1996 NPSL title win. Gutierrez played indoor soccer with the Crunch and outdoor soccer with other teams until the end of 1996-1997. In 2001-2002, Gutierrez also played 14 games with the Baltimore Blast. Gutierrez played in 1995 with the Myrtle Beach Boyz (USISL). The Boyz disbanded at the end the season. The San Jose Clash (MLS) selected Gutierrez, in the 98th round of 1996’s first MLS draft. He only played seven games in 1996, and scored one goal before being released by the Clash. The rest of 1996 was spent with the Rochester Raging Rhinos, A-League. He began his season with the Rhinos in 1997. The Rhinos traded Gutierrez in August to the Seattle Sounders for Justin Stoddard and Nate Daligcon. Gutierrez returned to MLS in 1998 with the Miami Fusion. In Miami, Gutierrez played in 87 regular season games and playoff games. He scored 14 goals and assisted on 25 more. Gutierrez was transferred to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, USL Second Division in 2001. He played two seasons with Pittsburgh. He signed with the Baltimore Blast in January 2002 on loan from Riverhounds to play the remaining season of the Major Indoor Soccer League.
