Henry Downey, born 27 December 1966, is an Irish former dual GAA footballer. He is best known for his Gaelic footballing for Derry’s senior football team in late 1980s, early 1990s, and early 2000s. He usually played at the centre back. He was captain of the 1993 All-Ireland Championship- winning team from Derry. He was also awarded two Ulster Senior Football Championships (1993 & 1998), four National League (1992, 1995, 1996 & 2000) medals along with Derry.

Downey was a member of Derry’s side that won four national leagues in 8 years (1992-95, 1996, 2000) and was the team captain in 1992 and 1996. In the 1998 National League decider, Downey and Derry were runners-up to Offaly.

Downey was a club footballer and hurler with Erin’s Own GAC Lavey. He won the 1991 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. He was one of the few players to achieve this rare double of inter-county and club All-Ireland. In 1993, Downey almost won both competitions. However, Lavey lost in the All- Ireland club after they had won the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship the second time. Downey won four Derry Senior Football Championship medals and 12 Derry Senior Hurling Championship silvers together with Lavey.

Downey was educated at St. Patrick’s College in Maghera. He won two consecutive MacRory cups (1984 and 1985). They were runners-up at the 1984 Hogan Cup final. He went to Queens University Belfast, where he won the Sigerson Cup.

Downey won the Ulster Under 21 Hurling Championship in 1986 with Derry, defeating Antrim along the way. In the semi-final at Loughguile he scored 0-12 against Antrim, while his brother Seamus scored 1-03 in a 2-20 to 1-06 win. After a reply, they beat Down in final; 3-09 to 1-02.

Downey won an All-star in 1993 at centre back and was named 1993 Texaco Footballer of the Year. He also won Footballer of the Year at the 1993 Ulster GAA Writer’s Association Awards.
