Hennadiy Popovych is one of the most popular and richest Footballer who was born on February 9, 1973 in Dniprodzerzhynsk, Ukraine. Hennadiy Popovych (Ukrainian Gennadii Popovich; Russian Gennadii Vanovich Popovich) was a professional Ukrainian footballer. He played from 9 February 1973 to 4 June 2010. He was born in Dniprodzerzhynsk. In 1991, he made his professional debut for FC Kryvyi Rih in the Soviet Second League B.

Popovych, who suffered a heart attack on June 4, 2010, died. The visitation at the Petrovskiy Stadium took place four days later. He was buried in Saint Petersburg’s Smolensky Cemetery.

In June 2012 on the Petrovskiy Stadium Zenit fans opened the memorial tablet dedicated to Popovych.

Popovych is a prominent player in Zenit’s pre-Gazprom (pre 2006) Zenit history. Andrey Arshavin claims that Popovych is the only center forward (classic number 9) who was physically strong and has been able to adapt to Zenit’s high-speed style. Although Popovych was not able to make it as a key player in Ukraine’s national football team, Valeriylobanovskiy loved the Popovych style and placed hopes for him at the dawn of the 21st century. Unofficial estimates suggest that Popovych is one of the most influential Ukrainian football players to have ever played in post-Soviet Russia.

Popovych was a trainee at the Mettalurg sport academy from Dniprodzerzhynsk. At the beginning of his career, he was playing for several teams including Prometei (1990), Kryvbas (91-1994), Zirka (94-1995), and Shakhtar (1995–1996). He moved to Russia in 1997 to play for Zenit, which he played more than 100 times and scored 41 goals. He reached the peak of his career with Zenit. He scored two goals against Celta in 2000’s Intertoto Cup final. Popovych later described these times as his most happy time in life and during his professional career. Popovych was awarded the bronze medal in Russia’s championship. Zenit was also the first sniper for the team during the 2001 season. Popovich was feeling sick in the autumn 2001, even though the season was still not over. Popovich later noted that his condition worsened with each new training. According to strong recommendations from doctors, he ended his football career at the end 2001 due to problems with his heart (two consecutive infarcts)

He was Zenit’s administrator between 2002 and 2005. He was the coach of Zenit’s youth team from 2005 to 2008. Popovych was appointed coach of Zenit Academy in 2009 and the Lokomotiv youth team in 2010. He enjoyed fishing and hockey in his spare time.

In January 2011 in the youth sport complex Zenit the tournament in the name of Popovych was organized.
