Gill signed for Rochdale for the 1980-81 season. He was the team’s top try scorer, with 18 touchdowns. Wigan was attracted to his elusive and quick style, so they signed him for the next season. Although Henderson was tall and bulky, he was agile and scored 145 tries for Wigan as well as 9 for Great Britain during his career. He was also an excellent left-foot goal-kicker, representing Great Britain fifteen times between 1981-88 and England once in 1981. Gill made his international debut in England playing for England. He scored a try during a win over Wales of 20-15 at Ninian Park, Cardiff. In the 1987-88 season, Gill was on the Wigan wing in the victory over Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in the World Club Challenge. The home team won 8-2 in a game that saw no try.
