Helmi Johannes is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on March 23, 1961 in Yogyakarta, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Helmi Johannes was born on Yogyakarta in Indonesia. He is the son of Herman Johannes (an Indonesian professor who was also the former rector at the Gadjah Mada University). His father moved to Yogyakarta, Java Island in the 1950s. There, he became an educator and was one of the founders and leaders of the Gadjah Mada University. A thoroughfare linking Yogyakarta’s business district and the university campus is named after him.

Helmi Johannes was on the executing committee of the Association of Indonesian Private Televisions. He was also Secretary-General of KOMTEVE, an organization that promotes public control over television content. He is also a charter member IJTI (Indonesian Television Journalists Association). In the 1994-1995 Citra tabloid poll, Helmi Johannes was the most popular male news presenter. Helmi Johanes was also nominated as the Panasonic Awards’ most beloved male newscaster for four years. Helmi Johannes was also a judge for the Asian Television Awards 2001, 2002, and 2003.

Helmi Johannes began his career in radio broadcasting for Geronimo FM in Yogyakarta. He then moved to Jakarta to join RCTI (the first private television network) in Indonesia. Helmi Johannes was instrumental in the founding of Seputar Indonesia (then Seputar Jakarta), which was the first Indonesian private television station to carry a newscast. Helmi Johannes was a reporter, producer and newscaster during his time at RCTI. He also served as a news production manager. Helmi was also the producer of Indonesia’s first late night newscast Buletin Maam (1991), and Indonesia Today (1996-1999).

In 2000, Helmi Johannes helped established Metro TV in Jakarta and served as executive producer, news research & development manager and news services manager as well as newscaster(2000–2005). Metro TV is Indonesia’s first 24-hour newschannel founded by media tycoon Surya Paloh who also owns the Media Indonesia daily. There Helmi served as weekend anchor of the network’s main evening newscast Metro Hari Ini and he also hosted Midnight Live, a mixture of talk show and live report on real-life issues.
