Helena Paparizou is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on January 31, 1982 in Borås, Västra Götaland, Sweden. Paparizou was born 31 January 1982 in Boras (Vastergotland), Sweden. She was the youngest child to Greek parents Georgios Paparizos (1948-198) and Efrosyne “Froso” Paparizou. Paparizou was born in Karditsa, western Thessaly to her parents. She has two siblings, Rita and Konstantinos (known as “Dinos”). Paparizou’s parents were married in the hometown of her mother and then moved to Boras in 1970. Paparizou developed asthma in 1985 and her lungs couldn’t withstand the cold Scandinavian climate. The family returned to Greece to live with their relatives. Two years later, Paparizou was stable enough to be able to return to Sweden to live with her family in Gothenburg. Paparizou learned Greek through the Greek-language school she attended. She did not make friends with many Swedish kids because of this. Paparizou still has breathing problems and carries an inhaler with her on-stage.
Paparizou was a Buddhist teenager, but she eventually converted to Eastern Orthodoxy as it is more comfortable for her. When she was 17 years old, she had a long-lasting relationship with Toni Mavridis, a fellow Swedish-born Greek. Mavridis is 11 year older. Mavridis was an antique impresario and wrote songs for all Paparizou’s solo albums. He was also her manager. Mavridis knew Paparizou for about a month before they began their relationship. She moved to Stockholm with him from her parents’ house. They were engaged after a traditional Greek engagement party with their families on 24 December 2000. Paparizou stated that Mavridis had never proposed to her, and that she prefers that he proposes in Western tradition. Mavridis suggested that they get married in Las Vegas. Paparizou, however, has already selected a koumbara as a bridemaid.
In late 2003, Paparizou signed a solo recording contract with Sony Music and released her debut single “Anapandites Kliseis”, as a double A-side with “Treli Kardia”. The release reached number one on the Greek Top 50 Singles Chart and was certified Gold by IFPI Greece. From late 2003, Paparizou was the opening act for various artists across Greece, including Antonis Remos and Giannis Spanos, Apostolia Zoi, Nino, Thanos Petrelis, Sakis Rouvas and Giorgos Mazonakis. Later in 2004, the video of “Anapandites Kliseis” won her a MAD Video Music Award for Best Dance Video, and was nominated for Best Video by a New Artist. At the award ceremony, Paparizou sang a duet of the song with its writer Christos Dantis.
Antique disbanded in 2003, and Paparizou signed a solo recording contract with Sony Music, releasing the chart-topping debut single “Anapandites Kliseis” and album Protereotita (2004), with emphasis on laïko, pop, and dance sounds, but at first had modest sales. In 2005, she represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “My Number One”, which she won. It was the first Greek win in the contest’s history and transformed her career. Her album was subsequently certified double platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry of Greece. Paparizou attempted a career beyond Greece with English-language material, charting in a few countries abroad. Her three subsequent albums Iparhi Logos (2006), The Game of Love (2006) and Vrisko To Logo Na Zo (2008) all peaked at number one in Greece and reached platinum sales. Her fifth studio album Giro Apo T’ Oneiro (2010) was also certified platinum. Paparizou’s final release before she left Sony Music, Greatest Hits & More, was released in 2011 and included “Baby It’s Over”, her biggest hit until 2016. Paparizou’s biggest hit to date is “An Me Dis Na Kleo” feat Anastasios Rammos.
Paparizou was asked by some DJ friends to demo the Notis Sfakianakis song “Opa Opa”. However, because the lyrics were written from a male perspective, Paparizou decided to join her childhood friend Nikos Panagiotidis to sing the song. Paparizou was approached by some record producers who wanted to sign a male/female duo that would cover traditional Greek songs. They formed Antique and were signed to Bonnier Music. The name “Antique” was chosen because it gave the impression that they were “classical” or “timeless” and reflected Paparizou’s association with Greek music as being old-fashioned and distant. Their debut single, “Opa Opa”, was a huge success in Sweden and Norway. It reached the top ten in both these countries, and made “Antique” the first artist to reach the top five in Sweden with a song in Greek. In Sweden, their later singles “Dinata Dinata”, “Follow Me” and “Moro Mou” also charted. She was also well-respected in Italy during the Antique and My Number One eras.

Helena Paparizou (Greek pronunciation: Elena Paparizou ; born 31 January 1982 in Greece) is a Greek-Swedish singer and songwriter. She was born in Sweden to Greek parents. After completing her education, she began her career in Sweden in 1999. She joined the laiko (Greek folk song) and the Eurodance duo Antique. They participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2001, and became a popular figure.
Paparizou was captivated by the arts from a young age. She took singing, dancing, and acting classes along with her academic studies. At seven years old, she began lessons in ballet, piano and Greek dance. She performed her first performance in front of a Greek audience at eleven when she sang “Moro Mou” by Christos Dantis. Paparizou decided that she wanted to sing and started studying Greek music two years later. Paparizou was fourteen years old when she formed Soul Funkomatic, her first group with three Hispanic teens. They were able to save money for recording songs and they continued playing hip-hop music. Two years later, they disbanded. Thirteen of Paparizou’s closest friends were killed in a fire at a Gothenburg nightclub. The incident occurred on 29 October 1998. More than two hundred people were hurt and sixty-three died. Although she had begged her mother for permission to go to the party with her, she was denied. Paparizou quit singing after losing her friends. She enrolled at the Art Performing School, where she studied acting, television, and directing.
Although relatively unknown in Greece in 2001, the duo entered the Greek national final of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “(I Would) Die for You”, composed by Nikos Terzis with lyrics by Antonis Pappas. They won joint first place, but as “Antique” had also won the public vote were declared the overall winners and went to the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. Their song won third place with 147 points; the highest Greek Eurovision placing ever. It became their biggest hit in Greece, reaching Platinum status, peaking at number three in Sweden and charting elsewhere. Antique’s Eurovision success led to wider recognition in Greece. They recorded four studio albums—which were only mildly successful—performed a small European and North American tour and collaborated with artists including Katy Garbi and Slavi Trifonov. Paparizou and Panagiotidis then decided to pursue solo careers. Initially, critics of the split accused Paparizou of abandoning her friend for her own career interests. Paparizou said the split was not permanent, but was a mutual decision to try other things, with plans of a reunion in mind.
