Branch was not in favour after Dave Jones became Wolves manager. He had loan spells and was transfer-listed with Reading, Hull City and Hull City for the next two year. After being denied a contract, Branch decided to leave Molineux and join Bradford City in July 2003.

On 10 July 2012, Branch was arrested by officers of the Serious Organised Crime Agency. At a later trial at Chester Crown Court, Branch admitted charges of possession with intent to supply class A and class B drugs. One charge related to the handover of just under 3 kilograms (6.6 lb) of amphetamine to another man in a Liverpool car park in March 2012; a second charge related to the seizure of 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of cocaine from his home address in Otterspool, Liverpool in July 2012. On 8 November 2012, Branch was jailed for seven years. His appeal against sentence was dismissed, on 14 February 2013, by three judges at the Court of Appeal. He was eventually released after three years, and in September 2016 was training to become an accountant.

He was unsuccessful in his attempt to get back into contention at Goodison Park and was then loaned to First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers, late 1999. He scored four goals during his loan period here. The deal was made permanent at PS500,000. He continued to play regularly throughout the 1999-2000 season, and only six more goals were added. Branch scored a controversial goal in the Wolves’ 1999/2000 home fixture against Nottingham Forest. He picked up what he believed was a loose ball from Forest keeper Dave Beasant, who wanted to stop the ball being played so Lee Naylor could get treatment. Beasant and Forest players confronted Branch for his actions and the officials and players had to separate the two sides. For his safety, he was forced to be replaced shortly thereafter.

Branch was born in Liverpool and began his career at Everton Academy. He made his senior debut as a substitute for Manchester United on 22 February 1996. Branch was a regular player in the first team during 1996-97, scoring his only goal for the club.
