Heiner Thiel uses a variety of sculptural materials. Heiner Thiel was initially fascinated by bronze casting in the 1970s, but he started to experiment with steel sheets in the 1980s. He studied sculpture with Michael Croissant [de] at the Stadelschule in Frankfurt. He was awarded the Mainz award in 1985 for being the most promising artist of visual arts. The following year he won the most promising award of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Thiel received a scholarship from the Stiftung Rheinland–Pfalz fur Kultur [de] – Kunstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral [de] in 1998. Thiel is a member the Darmstadter Sezession (“association of visual artists in Middle Rhine”)).
