Dr. Hayat bint Sulayman bin Hassan Sindi (Arabic : Hy@ sndy; born 6/11/67) is a Saudi Arabian physician and was one of the first female members of Consultative Assembly of Saudi Arabia. Her contributions to biotechnology and point-of-care testing are well-known. Arabian Business ranked her as the 19th most powerful Arab and the 9th most influential Arab woman. She was named one of BBC’s 100 Women in 2018.

Sindi won the Mekkah Al Mukaramah prize, which HRH Prince Khalid bin Faisal Al Saud gave in 2010. National Geographic Society also named her Emerging Explorer 2011.

On October 1, 2012, Sindi was appointed by UNESCO head Irina Bokova as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for her efforts in promoting science education in the Middle East, especially for girls. She was also on Newsweek’s list of 150 women who shook the world for that year.

In the annual meeting of Clinton Global Initiative held on September 21–24, 2014, Dr. Sindi was awarded with ‘Leadership in Civil Society’ prize.

Sindi is a visiting scholar from Harvard University. She travels frequently between Jeddah and Boston, Massachusetts. Sindi’s Harvard laboratory work earned her a spot in a documentary film produced by the Executive Office for the President of America. This film was made to promote science education among young Americans. Sindi was also involved in many events that promoted science awareness among females, especially in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Muslim World. She is also interested the issue of brain drain and was invited to speak at the Jeddah Economic Forum 2005.

Hayat Sindi was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. She convinced her family in 1991 to let her travel alone to the United Kingdom to complete her higher education. After spending a year learning English and studying for her A levels, she was accepted at King’s College London where she received a degree as a pharmacologist in 1995. She was awarded the Princess Anne’s Award while at King’s College for her undergraduate research on allergy.
