Hassan Hattab is one of the most popular and richest Paratrooper who was born on January 14, 1967 in Algeria. Hattab was born in Rouiba, 14 January 1967. He received his religious education in Rouiba. Later, he became a paratrooper during his national service in Algerian army. This was where he met his future lieutenants Amari Sifi and Abbi Abdelaziz. He became a mechanic after he left the army in 1989. After the 1992 election cancellation, he joined the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), the most radical Islamist guerrilla movement. He was made “amir”, or chief of the “second zone”, which it called (Kabylie, the eastern part, and the capital). He was, in fact, the signer of the document announcing the assassination by the GIA of Lounes Matoub, an anti-religious Kabyle musician.
The GSPC declared Hattab’s exclusion from the group on 9 February 2005. According to El Watan they considered Hattab a “stranger of jihad” and a suppliant before tyranny, further proving that the earlier rumors about his death were false. He was reported to have called on the GSPC in March to end their struggle.
The GSPC was primarily active in the eastern part of the country, notably in western Kabylie forests such as Mizrana and Boumehni. Soon, the GSPC overtook the GIA due to internal purges and military victories. Hattab was forced to resign as leader and Nabil Sahraoui assumed control of the group on 23 October 2003. Hattab believed that reconciliation should be encouraged and this was why Hattab lost his leadership position. Hattab was murdered by his own members in 2003, according to a “repentant” ex member. His successor, Sahraoubi, was able to report that Hattab had resigned “of himself”.
