After two years of fieldwork in New Britain, Papua New Guinea on a “cargo cult”, in the late 1980s, Whitehouse developed a theory about “modes of religion” that was subject to extensive criticism and testing by sociologists, archaeologists and historians.
Whitehouse’s published corpus contains a trio of books that outline his theory about modes of religiosity, and the dysphoric path to identity fusion.
Whitehouse has been focusing on trans-disciplinary collaborations since the beginning of the millennium. This includes ethnographic fieldwork and interviews as well as surveys in lab, field and online settings. Database construction and semantic network analysis are just some of the methods used. Whitehouse’s research program has expanded to include more than just religion and now examines the role of rituals in bringing people together and encouraging inter-group competition. Whitehouse, Scott Atran and John Alderdice are founding fellows of Oxford’s Centre for the Resolution of Intractable conflict at Harris Manchester College. Along with Peter Turchin, Pieter Francois, he is also the founding editor of Seshat: Global History Databank. Whitehouse has also worked with Quentin Atkinson and Amy Bogaard.

Whitehouse earned his B.A. Whitehouse received his B.A. in 1985 from the London School of Economics. In 1990, he completed his PhD in Anthropology from the University of Cambridge.
Whitehouse was the founding director of the Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University Belfast and the Centre for Anthropology and Mind at the University of Oxford. He was Head of the University of Oxford’s School of Anthropology from 2006 to 2009. In addition, he founded the Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology. Whitehouse was principal investigator in several large collaborative projects, including the Explaining Religion project, which was funded by European Commission; the Ritual Community and Conflict project, which was funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council; and the Ritual Mods project that was funded by an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council.
