He also serves as a composer, producer, arranger, and producer. He began his career as a chorister in Coventry Cathedral at the age six. His greatest accomplishments were as the founder, leader and musical director of Harvey and the Wallbangers.

Brough also continued to work as a musical director in theatre and as an arranger and producer for other artists. He was Natacha Atlas’ musical director and producer from 2006 to 2009. He also acted as the producer and arranger of her album Ana Hina. He began a long-lasting collaboration with Clara Sanabras in 2006, where he continues to be producer and arranger for her music. His composition Take This Slave of Music was featured in the performance of A Hum About Mine Ears by Clara Sanabras at the Barbican Centre, 2016.

In 2012, Brough was appointed Turner Sims Professor of Music at the University of Southampton. This permanent role was created for him so that he could take on the role of leader of the university’s community choir, University of Southampton Voices; the choir performs his original works as well as other music. Brough has also worked extensively with children’s choir Young Dissenters; children singing is a notable feature of his work. In May 2017, he was invited to conduct the junior LSO Discovery Choir for the London Symphony Orchestra between September 2017 and Easter 2018, replacing Lucy Griffiths.

Brough’s career was largely centered on composition by the turn of the 21st century. He worked primarily for commissions and in partnership with artists. Valete in Pace (2004) was a notable piece that Brough composed in this period. It was commissioned by Portsmouth City Council, the City of Caen, and was premiered at L’Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen, 6 June 2004. One-act opera Stumbling over Infinity was written in collaboration by Roswitha Gerlitz and performed at the Firsts Season at the Linbury Studio Theatre at The Royal Opera House in 2007. The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Wantage commissioned Thecla as part of an Arts Council funded project. The libretto was by James Runcie. The Barbican Centre premiered the suite A Fairy Dream, which was inspired by Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. Opera North commissioned Beached to be performed at Bridlington Spa by 300 singers in 2011.

At the age of seventeen, his older brother Lester (then a Clare College medical student, Cambridge), was killed in an accident on a motorcycle. Later, this formative influence was the inspiration for his composition Requiem in Blue. Brough went to Clare College in 1978 to study music. He was also taught by John Rutter. He also founded, directed, and sang in the Cambridge University Consort of Voices while there. It included Mark Padmore and Charles Daniels as well as Gerald Finley, Christopher Purves, and Christopher Purves. He was also close to Rutter’s ensemble, the Cambridge Singers.

The formation of choir Vox Holloway in 2009 marked the beginning of Brough’s career as an independent composer. As Vox Holloway’s musical director and composer-in-residence, he has written a series of works that have been performed by the choir at St Luke’s, West Holloway. New works by Brough that have been premiered by Vox Holloway include A Particulare Care, The Year of Jubilee, Adolesce, Cry Palestine, Linguis, Incantation of Eden, The City in the Sea and Music on the Mind. The choir has also performed works that have been premiered elsewhere, including Requiem in Blue, The Prophet, Thecla, Ona’s Flood and A Fairy Dream.
