Zolnierczyk was cut by the Flyers in October 2011. This followed his first NHL training camp. Zolnierczyk was re-called by the Flyers to replace Andreas Nodl, an injured forward, in a game against Ottawa Senators on October 18. He scored his first NHL goal against Senators goaltender Craig Anderson with 45 seconds left in the third period. The league suspended him for four consecutive games on March 3, 2013 for charging Mike Lundin in the incident.

Zolnierczyk was a young player in the 2001 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as part of the Mississauga Senators junior ice hockey team.
Zolnierczyk was a junior A player for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) from 2005 to 2007. He then attended Brown University, where he played four seasons of ice hockey with the Brown Bears. The Brown Bears compete in NCAA Division I in ECAC Hockey conference. Zolnierczyk, who had been named team captain in his senior season at Brown, replaced Aaron Volpatti, the graduating captain. On April 1, 2013, Zolnierczyk was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for enforcer Jay Rosehill. As a free agent and having left the Thunderbirds, Zolnierczyk agreed to a one- year AHL contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack, affiliate to the New York Rangers, on July 1, 2019.
