Hiestand was a tutor for 12 all-Big Ten offensive line selections during his time at Illinois. Hiestand signed every senior offensive lineman to an NFL contract in his first seven years as an Illini coach: Ryan Schau (1995–98), J. P. Machado (95–98), Marques Sullivan (97–2000), Ray Redziniak(97–2000), Luke Butkus (1898-2001), Dave Diehl (1999–2002) and Tony Pashos (1999–2002).

From 1997–2004, Hiestand served as offensive line coach in Ron Turner’s system and also was assistant head coach from 2000 until his departure.

In 1999, Hiestand’s line led Illinois to the highest scoring offense in school history with 388 points scored in 12 games. The UI offensive line cleared paths for Illini running backs to rush for 2,082 yards and provided quarterback Kurt Kittner the room to throw for 2,702 yards and 24 touchdown passes. Sullivan and Redziniak earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.

After a year at Toledo, Hiestand moved to Cincinnati in 1989. In 1992, he was the Bearcats’ run game coordinator. In 1993, he was their offensive coordinator. Running back David Small, as offensive coordinator, broke the Cincinnati record for rushing touchdowns. The offense also posted the 7th highest number of points in school history. After a 3-8 record in the previous season, Cincinnati’s 1993 team was 8-3.

Hiestand was an offensive lineman for Springfield College and East Stroudsburg college football between 1978 and 1980. Hiestand played at the latter with future New York Giants offensive coach Pat Flaherty. However, injuries cut his playing career in his junior season.

Hiestand started his coaching career as an offensive line coach in Toledo (1988), a graduate assistant coach in Southern California (1987), and tight ends and assistant coach at Penn (1986). After a serious injury, Hiestand began his coaching career at East Stroudsburg University. Hiestand was a member of five league championship teams at his seven stops: East Stroudsburg (1982-1983), Penn (1986), USC (87), Cincinnati (1993), and Illinois (192001). He was a member of the Trojan staff at 1988 Rose Bowl.

After a five-year stint at Cincinnati, went to the University of Missouri. With the Tigers, Hiestand helped MU to a No. 9 national ranking in rushing at 250.7 yards per game in 1996. In that same year, three of Hiestand’s offensive lineman garnered All-Big 12 honors.
