Harry Burton (23 Jan 1968 – 19 Nov 2001) was an Australian journalist, cameraman, and photographer who was kidnapped and murdered by the Taliban while traveling to Kabul in Afghanistan. The fate of three other journalists was the same.
Three men were sentenced to death by a Kabul court for their murders in 2005 and 2004. Mahmood Zar Khan and Abdul Wahid were both sentenced to death in 2005, while Reza Khan was sentenced on 20 November 2004.
In 2001, he had previously worked in Indonesia as a photojournalist covering the Free Aceh Movement in East Timor and the conflict in East Timor. He was a novice photographer and decided to travel to Jakarta. He was previously a Coles Myer Quality Manager. His breakthrough was in his coverage of August’s final months of Indonesian occupation of East Timor. After the Portuguese colony was voted for independence, he ran the Reuters television station in Dili.

He was among 19 journalists who were briefly held during the Fiji coup in 2000. In January 2000, Reuters made him a full-time photographer after his release.
Burton, who was working at Reuters at that time, moved to Afghanistan to report on the ongoing conflict. He was riding in a Jeep between Jalalabad and Kabul on November 12, just days after the Taliban had fallen, when his convoy was stopped. The passengers were ordered to leave. Three other journalists were also killed: Julio Fuentes from El Mundo in Spain, Azizullah Haidari from Reuters and Maria Grazia Cutuli from Corriere della Sera in Italy. Their bodies found mutilated were discovered on 19 November. Burton was buried at Hobart on the 28th of November 2001.
