Harold Rosenbaum was born 1950 in Danville in Pennsylvania. His family moved to Flushing, Queens in 1951. At an early age, he began to study piano and sing in choirs. He was also a talented musician and a singer in choirs. His childhood passion for drawing led him to briefly consider a career as an architect. He was particularly inspired by The Lion Hunt by Peter Paul Rubens. This famous Baroque painting, which he meticulously copied by himself, is a great example of his artistic talent. Flushing High School was his high school, and he graduated in 1967. He decided to study music the summer before his senior years. He was one of 16 young singers who were selected for an intensive summer choir program. His musical preferences were towards pop and folk music, with a strong influence from the famous folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary and Mario Lanza, an iconic film singer.

He founded the New York Virtuoso Singers professional choir in 1988, building upon the success of CNS. This was a result of a group of professional singers who had previously performed for the Brooklyn Philharmonic. The young group was invited to be the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music’s first guest chorus in 1993. They returned in 2013. Rosenbaum has been the NYVS’s leader in more than 100 concerts, including a tour through Scandinavia. NYVS has premiered more than 400 works by prominent contemporary composers including Luciano Berio and John Harbison. From 2010-2013 he was the artistic director of the Society for Universal Sacred Music, which sponsored music festival in NYC.

As a Queens College graduate student in 1973, he founded his first choir, Canticum Novum Singers. This amateur group quickly became a prominent presence on the New York City musical scene. Its reputation and skill has resulted in numerous tours and choral premieres for works by many composers, including Ned Rorem and Johann Christian Bach.

In 2007 Rosenbaum collaborated with Ennio Morricone and the Orchestra Roma Sinfonietta in concerts performed at the United Nations Headquarters and Radio City Music Hall
