Harold Kreis, a German-Canadian ice hockey coach who was born January 19, 1959, is a former professional hockey player. He is a member the German ice hockey hall- of-fame.
For the 2002-03 season, he signed with HC Davos, the National League A (NLA) top-tier Swiss ice hockey. He was assistant coach for the men’s team as well as head coach for the junior squad. Kreis left Davos after the 2004-05 season in order to assume head coaching duties at Swiss second division side EHC Chur. He was appointed head coach of HC Lugano during the 2006 NLA playoffs. Lugano was beaten 0-2 by Kreis in the quarterfinals. Kreis then took control and led the team to the title. Later, this was hailed as the “most incredible comeback in Swiss playoff history”.
His coaching tenure with Mannheim lasted three and a half years and included a DEL finals appearance in 2012. In January 2014, Kreis and the Adler organization parted company by mutual consent after a 0-5 loss to Wolfsburg.
In March 2014, Kreis agreed on a two-year deal with Swiss NLA team EV Zug and was handed a contract extension until 2017 in September 2015. In the 2016-17 season, he steered Zug to the NLA finals where they fell 2-4 to Bern. In April 2017, Kreis signed a fresh two-year contract with the EVZ organization. In the 2017-18 campaign, Kreis led EVZ to a second-place finish in the regular season before losing in the playoff quarterfinals. He parted ways with Zug after the season and then returned for a second stint as head coach of German team Düsseldorfer EG.
After retiring from football in 1997, Kreis became an assistant to the Mannheim coaching team and was instrumental in leading the team to the German championships 1998 and 1999. He was appointed as the second-division coach at EC Bad Nauheim in November 1999. Kreis was hired as an assistant coach for Kolner Haie 2000-01 and returned to Bad Nauheim where he remained until February 2002.

Kreis was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He played junior hockey with the Kildonan North Stars (Canada) and Calgary Wranglers (Canada) in the 1970s. In 1978, Kreis was 19 years old when he signed with Mannheimer ERC in Germany. The club was seeking Canadian players of German descent to apply for a German passport. This was because there was a limit on the number of foreign players allowed per team in the German league. He would remain with the club until 1997, when he retired from playing. Kreis was a long-serving captain of Mannheim’s team. He played 891 games for the club, winning the German championships in 1997 and 1980.
Kreis was also chosen to represent West Germany’s national teams in international competitions after he moved to Germany. He won 180 caps for West Germany during his career. He played in the 1988 and 1984 Olympic Games, as well as eight World Championships. He represented West Germany in the 1979 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
He won more silverware in 2008, when he captured his second Swiss championship title, this time with the ZSC Lions. Following the championship season and a two-year tenure in Zurich, the DEG Metro Stars of the German top-flight Deutsche Eishockey Liga appointed Kreis head coach in 2008. Under his guidance, DEG reached the DEL finals in 2009. In March 2010, he was sacked after a streak of eight losses in eleven games and after it was published that Kreis had signed a contract as head coach of fellow DEL side Adler Mannheim for the following season.
