Te Rangi began his career in rugby with the Piako Warriors. They won the Bay of Plenty Rugby league grand final in 1995. In 1996, he was selected for the Auckland Warriors’ development program.
After playing for the Leopards in 2000’s Bartercard Cup grand finale, he switched to the Eastern Tornadoes in 2001. He was a Bay of Plenty representative and was selected in 2001 for the Northern Districts team which played the touring French side.
Te Rangi also visited Australia with New Zealand Residents in 2000.
