This came after Kevin Minter and Vontaze Burfict were injured. Nickerson had five combined tackles during his debut career start, which came after the Bengals lost to the Minnesota Vikings 34-7. He had seven solo tackles for the season and was able to deflect a pass in Week 17. In 2017, he finished his rookie season with 18 combined tackles (12 solo) as well as one pass deflection in 14 games, two starts.

On September 1, 2019, Nickerson was waived by the Bengals and re-signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on November 15, 2019.
