This allowed Boniface to pursue his competitive life.

According to reports, Boniface was informed by The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (Govt. of India) that he had been awarded the Arjuna Award, which is the Government of India’s second highest award for excellence and sportsmanship. Boniface was not included in the list when the awards were announced. The same thing happened for two more years, and the apparent negligence prompted comments from the media in 2007. Boniface wondered why disabled athletes were not being given the attention they deserved. Bis now, he hasn’t received the Arjuna Award.

Boniface Prabhu was captivated by tennis from a young age. He used to love John Macenroe and Ivan Lendl. He discovered wheelchair tennis while participating in the 1996 World Wheelchair Athletic Meet in the UK. He returned to India and approached the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association to obtain permission to practice on their courts. He met a local coach who was willing to teach him how to play tennis. He was quick to learn and he began participating in tournaments in just two years.

He participated in javelin and shot put, as well as discus throws. He is the first Indian athlete to win a medal at the International Paralympic Games.
