His career started in the mid-1990s with ClubCall, a network of premium rate telephone lines that contained club information and commentary. He was a BBC Radio York reporter covering rugby league, cricket, and football. After that, he moved to Sun FM in Sunderland, and then to Metro Radio Newcastle.
He made his TV debut in April 1997 with Eurosport. He became the primary commentator for the Eurosport team, which included Archie Macpherson and Angus Loughran as well as Tim Caple, Tim Caple, Mike Vince, and Tim Caple at the 1998 World Cup in France. It took him just over a year. He was 26 years old when he became the youngest broadcaster who commented on the World Cup Finals for television.
