Gustavo Franca Borges (born December 2nd 1972) is a Brazilian former professional swimmer. He competed for Brazil during the Summer Olympic Games in: 1992 in 1996, 1996, 2000 and 2004. Borges along with the sailor Robert Scheidt, has won the second-highest number of Olympic medals for any Brazilian with four, including one in 1992 three in 1996 and one in 2000. They are second only to the sailor Torben Grael. Borges is also the third-highest holder of Pan American Games gold medals of any Brazilian and has eight more than the swimmer Thiago Pereira, and the table tennis athlete Hugo Hoyama. Borges was Brazil’s flagbearer during the Closing Ceremony at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
In the year 1990, Borges began to succeed in international competitions. At the South American championship held in Rosario, Argentina, he was awarded gold in each of the three events he participated in: the 50-meter freestyle in addition to the 4×100-meter freestyle as well as the four-meter freestyle. In July, in the Jose Finkel Trophy, which is the Brazilian short course championship, he made history as the only Brazilian to swim the 100-meter freestyle within 49 seconds. He did it with the time of 48.59 seconds. He also was invited to participate during the 1991 World Aquatics Championships in Perth, Australia. In the same year, as stated by Maria Lenk, Borges went to the United States to study at Bolles School located in Jacksonville, Florida.
At the 1991 World Aquatics Championships, Borges finished in 12th in the 100-meter freestyle, breaking the South American record with a time of 50.77 seconds, and also in the 50-meter freestyle (23.15 seconds). He also finished 28th in the 200-meter freestyle. Borges won his first important international medals in the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana. He won the 100-meter freestyle where he set a Pan Am Games record, and was silver medalist in 200-meter freestyle and bronze in the 50-meter freestyle, breaking the South American record. He also won gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle, and silver in the 4×200-meter freestyle.
In 1992, Gustavo Borges broke the Brazilian Olympic medals fasting in swimming, which was set at the 1984 Summer Olympics when Ricardo Prado won the silver in the 400-meter individual medley. Participating in his first Olympics the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Borges won the silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.43 seconds, a South American record, losing the gold to Alexander Popov. Borges was ranked sixth in the 4×100-meter freestyle, seventh in the 4×200-meter freestyle, 13th in the 50-meter freestyle and 22nd in the 200-meter freestyle.

Borges was born in Ribeirao Preto in Brazil however, he lived in Ituverava during his entire childhood. At 9 years old, Borges competed for his school and took third in a competition of 50 meters freestyle which was his first podium place. Before that, he taken swimming classes with the Associacao Atletica Ituveravense. In 1984 at Sao Joao da Boa Vista, Gustavo won his first medal in competitions for official athletes in the 100-meter breaststroke competition. Borges had been runner-up in his state of Sao Paulo state, and third in the Teto Olympic at breaststroke in the category 11/12 years.
The year 1987 was when Borges aged 15 was was swimming for his club, the Associacao Atletica Francana. He took home silver in freestyle 100 meters as well as silver for the freestyle 50 meters competition at the Sao Paulo Swimming Championship, Youth category A B. This year, Borges left Ituverava, relocated to Sao Carlos, and won his position as a member of the Sao Carlos Clube. Borges participated in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and became the first Brazilian to win three Olympic medals, a feat achieved by Torben Grael in the same games.
