Guo Yue is one of the most popular and richest Table Tennis Player who was born on July 17, 1988 in Liaoning, China. Yue is born in the year 1958 at Beijing, China. He was the eldest of 6 children, and was born during 1958, the time of China’s Maoist Great Leap forward. His family was a part of the traditional courtyards , surrounded by a mess of old alleyways, referred to as Hutongs. It was located in the vicinity that was between Drum and Bell Towers and the river and was that he would play when he was a kid. The courtyard of his hutong was home to family members of traditional musicians, a majority of them were of the rural area. His father did not have formal music education which is why Yue took lessons from fellow musicians and learned how to put his entire body, not just breath in the playing of the flute.
Yue composed Music, Food and Love together with Clare Farrow, which was released in the year 2006. It’s an autobiographical tale about the Chinese Cultural Revolution, seen through the eyes of a child. Yue had no formal education, yet was born with a deep fascination with nature, music and cooking. He describes how these interests allowed him to discover a way to express himself during a time in which independence and personal freedom was viewed as something to be feared at, and often thwarted through the policies and practices under Mao Zedong.
In 2009 Horse and Bamboo Theatre and Barefoot Books collaborated with Guo and his wife, Clare Farrow, on a theatre production based on Little Leap Forward: A Boy in Beijing, the story of his childhood; this show toured the UK.
The range of Yue’s work has gone well beyond the traditional Chinese music. He has collaborated in collaboration with Peter Gabriel, Sinead O’Connor and Hothouse Flowers. Yue has also worked with musical talents who hail from Africa, Italy and Japan. In 1992, he was awarded an American instrumental prize with his album Trisan (Real The World) in collaboration with Japanese Taiko drummer Joji Hirota, as well as the Irish composer/singer Pol Brennan. In 1995, Yue as well as Joji made the record Red Ribbon, and his bamboo flute concerto , ‘My Peking Alley’ was performed during The 1999 WOMAD Festival, which took place in Reading along with his BBC Concert Orchestra.

His birthplace was in Beijing, China during the period of the Cultural Revolution. He plays a variety of bamboo flutes and is currently residing in London. The musician has been recorded by Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. He’s also a fan of cooking and has come up with ways to blend cooking and flute playing in certain of his shows.
The third sister of Yue, Yan, was living in England in 1982. In the meantime, she assisted him in leaving China. He was accepted at the Guildhall School of Music, where he learned playing the flute, which is known as the “silver. Since then, Yue has had a varied music career that includes composing as well as arranging, performing, as well as recording Chinese music. He recorded alongside his older sister Guo Yi (Guo Yi ) whom he plays the sheng (a type of mouth organ made from bamboo). In 1990, they released an album of Real World album called ‘Yuan’. In 2008 Little Leap Forward: A Boy in Beijing was published by (Barefoot Books). It covers much of the same autobiographical territory, but is aimed at a younger reader. Little Leap Forward offers a touching boy’s view of the Cultural Revolution as the backdrop for his growing-up years. The book is named ironically. Throughout he refers metaphorically to his caged pet bird. The bird has never sung one note in the cage its confined to, but on him releasing it, the bird returns to him and sings joyously. His friend, Little- Little, asks him the question – “Wouldn’t you rather be free, just for a day, than spend a lifetime in a cage? It’s beautifully illustrated by the artist Helen Cann, and it was this book that formed the source material for the Horse and Bamboo production. There are black-and-white autobiographical photos of the author in the Afterword.
