Carlsson (born on the 22nd of August 1952 on the 22nd of August 1952 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a famous American mathematician working in the field of algebraic topology. He is well-known for his research in the field of Segal conjecture as well as his research on applied algebraic topology and particularly topological analysis of data. He is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Mathematics at Stanford University. He is the president and founder of the predictive technology firm Ayasdi.
It was also an Ordway Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota (May- June 1991) and was awarded an Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship (1984-1986). He was invited to give an speech during the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley, California, in 1986; a plenary speech at the annual gathering of the American Mathematical Society (1984) and his participation in the Whittaker Colloquium held at the University of Edinburgh (2011) and The Rademacher Lectures in the University of Pennsylvania (2011) and an invited speech at the annual conference of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2012). He was selected as one of the class of 2017 Fellows in the American Mathematical Society “for contributions to algebraic topology, particularly equivariant stable homotopy theory, algebraic K-theory, and applied algebraic topology”.
in 2008 Carlsson was the co-founder of Ayasdi, an artificial intelligence- based technology that predicts future events based on machine learning, big data as well as artificial intelligence.

Carlsson was born in Sweden and attended school throughout his native Sweden. He was educated in the United States. Carlsson graduated from Redwood High School (Larkspur, California) in 1969. He earned an Ph.D. in mathematics from Stanford University in 1976, with a dissertation completed under the direction by R. J. Milgram. His position was as a Dickson assistant professor at the University of Chicago (1976-1978) and Professor at the University of California, San Diego (1978-86), Princeton University (1986-1991) and Stanford University (1991-2015) where was his Anne the Bill Swindells Chair. He was also the Chair of the Department of Mathematics from 1995 until 1998.
Segal’s Burnside conjecture is an explanation of the stable cohomotopy theories of the classification space of the finite group. It is the analogy for cohomotopy that was developed by Michael Atiyah and Graeme Segal in the K-theory of these spaces of classifying. Based on earlier work by J.F. Adams, J.H.C. Gunawardena, H. Miller, J.P. May, J. McClure, and G. Lewis, Carlsson confirmed this conjecture in the year 1982. He also modified the method to prove the fixed point conjecture of Sullivan, that was further proved in tandem and independent fashion through H. Miller and J. Lannes.
Carlsson has worked in computational topology, especially as it applies to the analysis of high dimensional and complex data sets. In collaboration with others, he has demonstrated the utility of both persistent homology and the Mapper methodology in a series of papers. This work is central to the development of tools by Ayasdi, Inc, for analyzing massive and complex data sets across multiple application domains. In January 2016, he published a topological data analysis on the Donald Trump presidential campaign, 2016 and was able to outline the reach potential of Trump’s messages in the mind of skeptical voters.
