Grooverider is one of the most popular and richest Disc Jockey who was born on April 16, 1967 in Streatham, England, United Kingdom. Raymond Bingham (born April 16 1967 Streatham, London, England) more popularly known as Grooverider is a British drummer and bass DJ. The DJ and his associate Fabio are considered to be “originators” of the scene.

As a musician, Grooverider released one album called Mysteries of Funk (Sony 1998) which was recorded in collaboration with Optical as well as a variety of remixes. These include his remixes to Jonny L’s “Piper” plus Roni Size/Reprazent’s “Share The Fall”. The year 2005 was the time he hosted the weekly Sunday afternoon session Grace on the floor of The London nightclub, Herbal.

Grooverider returned to the BBC Radio 1 drum and bass show with Fabio in October 2008, until it finally ended in March 2012. Since September 2016, they have brought their long-running radio show to London’s Rinse FM.

Together with Fabio who was his host, Fabio hosted a radio show that aired on Kiss 100 from 1994 to 1997. From 1997 on, Grooverider created the compilation album Prototype Years which featured the most popular tracks from different artists that appeared under his labels. Prototype is renowned for its irregular releases that have included music with drums and bass by Dillinja, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Ed Rush, Photek and Optical. In 1998 Fabio and he Fabio introduced their show radio-based to an international listenership on BBC Radio 1.

Grooverider started DJing gigs at illegal raves and warehouse events throughout the UK in the latter half of 1980, and gained notoriety with his partner Fabio through his performances at club nights like the revolutionary Rage at Heaven. Grooverider was also a DJ on his own London pirate station called Phase One during the mid-80s with Fabio and DJs like Colin Dale, Dave Angel as well as Booker T. He originally was a hip-hop, soul and disco, but later switched to house after becoming a convert after listening to “Mysteries of Love” by Mr. Fingers.

Fabio and Grooverider began their house music at the Mendoza’s restaurant in Brixton. After that, the duo moved to a place at Barrington Road in Brixton, however it wasn’t until 1991 that they could be able to make a contribution to the scene. The year was 1991 when Grooverider and Fabio were invited to stay at Rage. In the 1990s, Grooverider released tracks as Codename John and contributed to the fame for Matrix and Boymerang by releasing tracks on his own label Prototype.

On 24 November 2007, Grooverider was arrested at Dubai International Airport for possession of 2.16 grams of cannabis, which he claimed he had forgotten was in a pair of his trousers. “I must have forgotten the spliff,” he said in an interview. “It was a small amount. Back home I would not even get prosecuted.” On 19 February 2008, he was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, to be followed by immediate deportation (four years is the mandatory sentence for drug possession in the United Arab Emirates). He was pardoned and released on 3 September 2008, during the holy month of Ramadan that traditionally sees the pardoning of select prisoners in UAE. In an interview with BBC, Grooverider described his experience and the conditions in which he was placed as “appalling”.
