Straker, a ten-year minor leaguer who reached the 1987 World Series in the rookie year, was a 10-year veteran. Straker was a young prospect and was eventually released by the Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, and other teams. As their third starter, he joined the Twins alongside Bert Blyleven and Frank Viola.
Straker was the first Venezuelan to start games three and six of the World Series. After being placed on the disabled list in 1988, Straker never fully recovered his form and was released after the season. He also played in two more minor league seasons.
