Greg Makowski is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on July 5, 1956 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. At the time he received his first cap for his first team in the U.S., Makowski was already an experienced player in his U.S. Olympic soccer program. Makowski began playing for this team around 1977, and continued to play in games up to 1981. In 1980 Makowski was among the U.S. qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics to be held in Moscow. The problem was that Makowski as well as his teammates were not allowed to participate due to the fact that President Carter pulled out of the games following that the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

Gregory “Greg” Makowski is a former U.S. soccer defender. He was the three- time first team college All American and was a part of that 1988 U.S. Olympic soccer team which was not allowed to compete during the Moscow Olympics because of the boycott by President Carter of the Olympics. He also played 14 times as a member of the U.S. national team. Between 1978 and 1988, he was a player with a variety of teams from the North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League.

The year was 1980 when he was a member of the new St. Louis Steamers of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). Makowski played at minimum two seasons with the Steamers. Then he joined the Kansas City Comets from 1982 until 1985, when he was re-signed with the Steamers for at minimum one more season. According to National Soccer Hall of Fame record, Makowski played in MISL until 1987.

Makowski has played in 12 matches for his countrymen in the United States from 1978 to 1980. The first time he played for the national team was September 20, 1978, in a defeat against Portugal. This was the final U.S. game of the year. However, In 1979, his name was able to see his name in six of seven U.S. games. On the 7th of October 1979 He scored his first goal for the national team during the 3-1 win over Bermuda. His final game was on the 9th of November, 1980, the loss against Mexico.

The Colorado Caribous, an expansion franchise of the North American Soccer League (NASL) was selected by Makowski as the first selection at the time of the year 1978’s NASL College Draft. When the Caribous relocated to Atlanta between 1977 and 1978 seasons Makowski moved with them. In 1979, he was an official of the Atlanta Chiefs. He played 59 regular season games over the two NASL seasons.

Makowski grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where he played youth soccer with Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. He attended Rosary High School. After graduating from high school, Makowski attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where he played on the men’s soccer team from 1974 to 1977. His sophomore year, the Cougars went to the NCAA championship game only to fall to San Francisco. While he never won a championship at Southern Illinois, he was selected as a first team All American in 1975, 1976 and 1977. He also finished his four seasons with the Cougars in thirty-second place on the school’s career scoring record with seventeen goals and ten assists. Makowski failed to attain his degree during his four years playing at Southern Illinois, but he continued to work toward it and was awarded a B.S. in 1979. In 2005, SIU-E inducted Makowski into the school’s Hall of Fame.
