The first choice (21st overall) in the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, Golson played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Phillies (2008), Texas Rangers (2009) and New York Yankees (2010-2011).

Golson was a student at John B. Connally High School in Austin, Texas. Golson was the Philadelphia Phillies selected Golson from high school with the 21st pick in the initial selection of the Major League Baseball Draft. Following his selection in the draft, the Phillies were able to assign Golson the Gulf Coast League affiliate in the rookie leagues.
