When he was a kid, Gilbert played in the 1975 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a member of an ice hockey minor team from Mississauga.
In his 16-season NHL professional career Gilbert was a player for New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. He has three times been Stanley Cup Champion, winning it with the Islanders in 1982 and 1983, as well as together with the Rangers in 1994. In 2019, Gilbert is the only player in NHL history to have won the Stanley Cup with both New York City franchises.
On December 10, 2011, Gilbert was named the head coach of the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League, taking over for Todd Watson.
