Greg Brentnall (born 5 December 1956 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales) is an Australian former footballer from the rugby league which played throughout the 1970s and 80s. A former Australian international as well as a New South Wales official fullback as well as wing, he was a player in the team of Canterbury-Bankstown as part of the New South Wales Rugby League premiership. In the 1960s, Brentnall was a player of Australian rules football for his team the Turvey Park Bulldogs in the Riverina Football League Representing New South Wales in the Teal Cup, Brentnall caught the attention of talent scouts of the in a state of decline South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Then, he changed to rugby league, signing an agreement to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the New South Wales Rugby League competition. In 1973, he also was a player in the team of Turvey Park in the Group 9 Country Rugby League competition. The ability to catch high balls was a major advantage as a fullback for numerous professional teams in the league and also for the national team of Australia.
Brentnall was a wing player of New South Wales in the first State of Origin game and scored the first attempt for the team in Origin history. Later that year played in Canterbury-Bankstown’s Grand Final-winning side. The year 1982 was the time he was the first Canterbury Rothmans Medal winner and also played in the same year’s unbeaten Kangaroos, “The Invincibles” and played all six tests during the tour, which included the first ever test for Australia in a match against Papua New Guinea which was performed immediately prior to the tour.
