The 19th of June, 2009 Steele has been appointed as a member of his position on the Executive Council of Nova Scotia in which he was Minister of Finance and the Minister for Acadian Affairs. In May 2012 Steele quit his cabinet position and declared that he was not returning for his next elections. Steele was named as an honorary member of Nova Scotia’s Executive Council of Nova Scotia on May 31 2012.

He became a broadcaster on CBC Information Morning, providing a weekly political commentary. In September 2014, he released a memoir called What I Learned About Politics: Inside the Rise — and Collapse – of Nova Scotia’s NDP Government. The book was a shortlisted nominee for the 2015 Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing.

Steele taught at the Rowe School of Business at Dalhousie University from 2016 to 2019.

In 2001, Steele was a successful candidate for his Nova Scotia New Democratic Party nomination in the district of Halifax Fairview. Steele was elected in the March 2001 by-election in which he won this seat by securing 58.17 percent of the vote. Steele was reelected in elections of 2003 (45.85 percent) 2006 (58.51 percentage) and the 2009 provincial elections (63.71 percent).
