Barrow also guided his team to an FA Trophy semi-finals and victory in the final of the Nationwide Variety Club Trophy, which was praised by the players who said they was the only one to have “single-handedly put Chester back on the football map”. Barrow was first a manager at Chester City in 1992 (as manager-player) and he racked up seven points in four games as caretaker manager. Even though the team was demoted into third division in the Football League Third Division in 1993, Barrow inspired the Blues to return the following season and earn promotion However, he left the club at the end of the season of 1994, citing anger over key players’ departures and the absence of financial support of the Board. Barrow resigned as a player following his departure, his last appearance coming in Chester’s 3-2 victory over Preston North End on 2 April 1994, only two months prior to the 40th anniversary of his birthday.
