On 1 December 2006, Murty signed a new contract to keep him at Reading until the summer of 2008, which meant he would complete 10 years at the club. On 31 March 2008, it was announced that, despite a previous announcement to the contrary, Murty had been awarded a testimonial in recognition of his services to the club, with a proportion of the proceeds going to the Swings and Smiles charity, of which he is a patron. The testimonial match was held on 21 July 2009 at Reading’s Madejski Stadium and featured the current Reading team taking on members of the Reading Championship winning team of 2005–06.

Murty joined Reading with a four-year agreement on July 6, 1998, for a fee of PS700,000, which was at the time the highest amount paid by Reading and also the most expensive fee paid by York. The first couple of seasons were marred by injuries. But, after he was free of injuries, he soon became an integral member of the team. And after Phil Parkinson left the club to become the manager for Colchester United, Murty was named captain of the club. The 30th April of 2006 was the day that Murty scored his only goal, via an injury during the 280 games in league and cup during the time that Reading took on Queens Park Rangers on the last game of the season 2005/06. This ensured that Reading scored 106 points an all-time mark for the second division in English football. The only goal he scored for Reading was in the match against Bristol City in March 2001.

Murty was born in Saltburn, North Yorkshire and was a student at Nunthorpe School. He was a member of the Middlesbrough’s Centre of Excellence after being sought out to play in the Marton Juniors. He moved onto coaching after retiring from playing, and was appointed as an assistant youth development coach at Southampton’s Academy on 27 February 2012, working primarily with the under-12 to under-16 teams. On 14 July 2014, Murty joined Championship club Norwich City as youth development phase lead coach, taking control of the under-16 team.
